Although I thought this idea up on my own, it's already posted here, but my idea is slightly different. I'll give a link to the original on this site anyways: http://www.mmowned.com/forums/wow-scams/14805-auctioneer-mod-scam.html. I thought this one up, sadly enough because I fell for it. Pathetic, I know. Well, that's enough of that, moving on.
The Scam:
Find an item that is rarely (if ever) on the AH, but try to make sure it has a special name. An item that has no sell price to a vendor would also be good. A great item to use is Belamoore's Research Journal (Thottbot World of Warcraft: Belamoore's Research Journal) and yes, this is the item I was scammed with. This item is good because thottbot says it sells for 6g, and it is a pretty common drop off one mob. However, you can do this with any White-Named item.
Now what you do with this item is you list it on the AH for a few days (2 weeks is the best time I find) for a stupidly high price (such as 25-50g). After 2 weeks, most people will have gotten a good scan of it on the AH, so their Auctioneer mods think its worth however much you've been listing it for. During this period of time, you may also want to go pick up additional copies of the item you are using. When you are ready, list one (or several, but if more than one use mulitple toons) of the item on the AH for 10 or so gold lower than you were listing it for during the past 2 weeks. Inevitably, someone will fall for this scam while afk AHing or someone will see it and buy it because they are a noob.
You can do this again, but it may be wise to use a different item each week/month. So far I have totaled around 1000g from this scam, and I've only been doing it a few weeks.
To Draz's request: There are many vendor bought recipes that people know aren't worth squat on the AH so they don't list them. These can also be good items to use, because if one of the people you are targetting for the scam sees this, they probably own't thottbot it or something, and just seeing the profit from it they'll buy it. Also, another tip I just thought of, although you may lose some money, the end reqard will be greater. There is an auctioneer out now that says if the auction was bought out or not. You can use another toon to buy the auction out if you wish, thus also fooling the better type of acutioneer. You will lose the AH cut though.
This is my first scam posted on MMOwned, so I hope you all liked it.
Happy Scamming!!
